Fifty Shades of Advising: Continued

This is a continuation of our lively discussion from Burbank, and the thorniest issue remains: proofreading. Share your insights into what works and what doesn't and how far you can go and still ensure the publication is student-led and comprises student work.

The work product of this session will be the basis for our revision of the Canons of Community College Journalism. It will also help the board fashion a disclaimer statement we all must check before entering JACC publication contests.

Apples and Oranges: Teaching Photojournalism in Publication Classes

How do we teach our photojournalism in our classes? How do we deal with a room containing writers without basic photography skills alongside photographers with no idea about journalism or how to write?

What assignments do we use? What are our expectations? What is our workflow? How closely is the photojournalism class connected with the newspaper/web production classes?

This workshop is designed to pull on our collective wisdom to address these challenges.

Data Journalism: What's a Two-Year College to Do?

Nancy Kaplan-Biegel has made it her mission over the past several years to educate herself about data journalism, taking several MOOCs on the topic, including one recently offered through the Journalism and Media Studies Centre from the University of Hong Kong. While no expert (and, in fact, a typical math-a-phobe), she has nonetheless built data journalism assignments into several of her courses.

Workshop participants will leave with an introduction to several key data journalism skills (bring your laptop!) and an out-of-the-box data journalism unit to take home. We will also discuss why data journalism is so important and brainstorm additional ways we can teach this important skill set. Can't attend? Assessment: How Do We Determine Grades for Student Publications

Community college media advisers are typically challenged to find a grading method for their publication classes. At this workshop, we'll share best practices and different models. Please bring your handouts, syllabi or electronic presentations to share. Audio-video will be available.

Using the State Online Education Initiative To Build Enrollment

Courses that "pass" a review based on a rubric will be eligible to participate in a developing statewide Course Exchange, which allows students from any college to take our college courses seamlessly. This could be a boon to our enrollments.

Joanna Miller is one of seven lead course reviewers for @One, which is the teaching arm of the CCC system, and the group tasked by OEI to teach the rubric. The group presents daylong workshops on the rubric all over the state. To bring this workshop to a campus costs about $5,000, but Joanna will do a shortened version for JACC.
